A Year Without Beer: The Positive Impact On Health And Life

by Shreeya

Julian Tittershill’s journey to better health began not with his weight gain, heart problems, or blood cancer diagnosis, but with the mental strain of depression and anxiety. He knew he had to stop drinking because of how it affected his well-being.

At 52, Julian had spent years enjoying beer, making it a central part of his social life. He drank about 70-100 units a week, often having multiple beers at dinner and while cooking. Despite maintaining an active lifestyle, including regular gym sessions, he continued gaining weight and struggled with alcohol dependence.

Julian’s health took a turn when he experienced atrial fibrillation, a heart condition, followed by a diagnosis of polycythaemia, a blood disorder. These health issues were the wake-up calls he needed. In 2021, after trying and failing to moderate his drinking, he decided to quit alcohol completely. Since then, his life has drastically improved.

His blood cancer is under control, and he no longer needs regular treatment. His liver health has also improved, and his cholesterol has halved.
