Dairy Intake: Key to Gut Health with Varied Effects from Milk and Cheese, Study Finds

by Shreeya

A new study published in Nutrients reveals how different dairy products influence gut health by altering the microbiome. Researchers examined the effects of milk, cheese, and other dairy products on the bacterial composition of the gut and its potential implications for health. The findings suggest that milk promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, while cheese may disrupt microbial balance, potentially impacting digestion and metabolism.

Gut health plays a significant role in overall well-being, affecting everything from digestion to immune function. Recent research underscores the importance of diet, particularly dairy intake, in shaping the gut microbiota, the collection of bacteria that resides in the digestive system. Dairy has long been considered a source of essential nutrients, but its effects on gut bacteria have been the subject of ongoing debate. While some studies highlight the positive role of dairy, others raise concerns about its potential to cause inflammation and metabolic issues.

This study, involving 34 participants, explores how different dairy products influence the gut’s microbiome. Researchers found that increased milk consumption led to higher levels of beneficial bacteria like Faecalibacterium and Akkermansia, which are associated with reduced inflammation and improved gut barrier function. On the other hand, cheese consumption was linked to a decrease in microbial diversity, potentially indicating negative impacts on gut health.

Notably, while milk appeared to support the growth of good bacteria, cheese consumption was associated with a reduction in Bacteroides—a bacterium tied to colorectal cancer—and Subdoligranulum, linked to metabolic disorders. This contrast highlights the complex role of dairy in shaping gut microbiota, suggesting that milk’s lactose may promote health, while the fermentation process in cheese could have different effects.

While yogurt has been traditionally seen as a gut-friendly dairy product, the study did not find significant associations between yogurt intake and gut health, likely due to the low consumption of yogurt in the study group.

The results suggest that a balanced approach to dairy consumption could offer health benefits, emphasizing milk over cheese for its potential to support a healthier gut. However, further research is necessary to explore the long-term impacts of dairy on gut microbiota and its broader implications for metabolic, immune, and digestive health.
