A recent outbreak of listeria infections, linked to frozen nutritional shakes, has resulted in significant health concerns across the United States. The outbreak, which has been ongoing since 2018, has led to 38 reported cases of listeria infections across 21 states, with 37 hospitalizations and 12 deaths confirmed by the FDA. The majority of those affected were residents of long-term care facilities or had been hospitalized prior to falling ill.
The contaminated products, Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, were distributed primarily to hospitals and long-term care facilities. These shakes were produced by Prairie Farms Dairy in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and have been recalled nationwide. The FDA became aware of the outbreak in late November 2024, after many cases were reported among residents of long-term care facilities.
Health Risks and Symptoms:
Vulnerable Groups: The elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are at a heightened risk of severe listeria infections.
Symptoms: Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and in severe cases, confusion, stiff neck, and convulsions. These symptoms may appear up to 10 weeks after consuming contaminated food.
Prevention: To mitigate the risk of cross-contamination, facilities are advised to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces that came into contact with the recalled products.
The ongoing investigation by the FDA and CDC underscores the importance of food safety, particularly in healthcare settings where vulnerable populations are more susceptible to severe outcomes from foodborne illnesses.
