The FDA has expanded its recall of acne products contaminated with benzene, a known carcinogen, affecting six more treatments from brands like Walgreens, Proactiv, SLMD, and Zapzyt. These products were recalled after FDA testing revealed elevated levels of benzene, which can form when benzoyl peroxide degrades under certain conditions.
Benzene is a chemical that can be harmful over time, with prolonged exposure linked to an increased risk of cancer. Although the FDA states that the risk of cancer from these products is low, the recall is a precautionary measure to protect consumers.
The recalled products include:
- La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Treatment (Expiration: April 2025)
- Walgreens Acne Control Cleanser (Expiration: September 2025)
- Proactiv Emergency Blemish Relief Cream (Expiration: October 2025)
- Proactiv Skin Smoothing Exfoliator (Expiration: July 2025)
- SLMD Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion (Expiration: March 2025)
- Walgreens Tinted Acne Treatment Cream (Expiration: March 2026)
The FDA’s investigation began after concerns were raised from third-party tests showing benzene contamination. The full results of the FDA’s own testing are expected in the coming months.
For consumers who own any of these products, the FDA suggests checking for expiration dates and discarding any expired items. The recall affects products available in stores and online marketplaces, but no specific instructions have been given regarding currently owned items.
