Long-Term Use Of NSAIDS Linked To Reduced Alzheimer’s Risk, Study Finds

by Shreeya

A recent study has revealed that long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin, may be associated with a lower risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, analyzed data from over 11,000 participants, showing that those who used NSAIDs for more than two years had a reduced risk for dementia.

However, shorter-term NSAID use was linked to a slight increase in dementia risk, highlighting the importance of duration in achieving potential benefits.

The study’s findings underscore the potential role of inflammation in dementia development. NSAIDs, known for their ability to reduce inflammation, might impact the risk of cognitive decline.

The research, which examined participants from the Rotterdam Study, indicated that the relationship between NSAIDs and dementia risk varies significantly depending on the length of use. Those who used NSAIDs for over two years experienced a noticeable decline in the likelihood of developing dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s.

However, the study’s limitations, including its observational nature and the focus on prescription NSAIDs, suggest that further research is needed to understand the full implications of long-term NSAID use on dementia prevention. The study also highlights that some NSAIDs, particularly those not associated with reducing amyloid-beta protein in the brain, may offer greater protective benefits against cognitive decline.

Experts caution that while these findings are promising, NSAIDs come with potential side effects, and more research is necessary before they become a recommended preventive measure against Alzheimer’s disease.
