Over 2,000 bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir have been recalled due to a serious child poisoning risk, as announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday. The recall comes after concerns were raised about the packaging, which fails to meet child safety requirements under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.
Benadryl Liquid Elixir contains diphenhydramine, a widely used antihistamine found in allergy and sleep medications. As mandated by law, all medications with diphenhydramine must be housed in child-resistant packaging to prevent accidental ingestion by children. Unfortunately, the 100-milliliter bottles involved in this recall were not equipped with such safety features, posing a potential risk of poisoning.
Arsell Inc., based in Brooklyn, New York, is overseeing the recall, which affects specific bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir sold on Amazon.com. Importantly, no incidents or injuries have been reported related to the recalled products.
Which Bottles of Benadryl Were Recalled?
The recall applies to 100-milliliter bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir, sold in a paper box bearing the code “X003VRIGUL” on the label. The bottles are round, dark plastic containers with a pink and white label on the front, with “Benadryl” written in blue lettering.
Around 2,300 bottles of the product are affected by this recall. These bottles were sold on Amazon.com between July 2023 and October 2024, with prices ranging from $16 to $19.
Why Was Benadryl Recalled?
The recall was issued due to a packaging issue. Benadryl Liquid Elixir contains diphenhydramine, which can be harmful in excessive amounts, particularly to young children. This has led to the implementation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, which requires that medications containing diphenhydramine be packaged in child-resistant containers.
Unfortunately, the bottles involved in this recall do not meet these safety standards, creating an increased risk for children who may accidentally ingest the medication. It is crucial to note that the recall pertains only to the bottles, not the medication itself. However, both the medication and the bottle should be discarded to ensure safety.
