Kelowna-based pop-punk band Cawston is set to release their debut album, “Therapy Sessions,” which addresses various mental health issues. Founded in 2021, the band consists of Alexis Artiga (lead guitarist and vocalist), Debin Corbach (drummer), and Jenna Johnson (lead singer).
Cawston’s journey has been marked by a series of singles that tackle different mental health conditions. Their single “Sara Tune In” explores ADHD, “Safe with Me” deals with avoiding emotions, “Quicksand” is about being in a manipulative relationship, and “Stranger” reflects on parting ways with a toxic friend.
“I have a lot of anxiety, I am in my head a lot,” said Artiga. “Working graveyard shifts, I don’t get as much sleep as I should, enough sun as I should and music helps me get through the day. Working all night and playing music all day is therapeutic for me.”
For the band, music provides a therapeutic outlet. “It’s just a way to sit down and be separated or isolated from all your problems,” said Corbach. “When you are with your instrument either there alone or with other musicians everything, you can release it. For me, it’s hitting the drums; for [Artiga], it’s hitting his strings.”
Their honest approach to mental health has resonated with listeners, earning them thousands of streams on various platforms. Their rising popularity has led to a record deal with SBG Records and increased recognition.
“It’s finally happening, we are getting the momentum that we have been trying to get for years,” said Johnson. “We came out post-pandemic, we started in 2021 so this is our third year of being the band Cawston… We are getting picked up for tours, we just got picked up for Denim on the Diamond and like that’s huge.”
Cawston’s debut album “Therapy Sessions” will be released on June 21. Following the album release, the band will tour the Thompson Okanagan region, performing in various cities:
June 21: Marten Brewing Co., Vernon
June 22: Clancy’s Pub, Penticton
June 23: Detonate Brewing, Summerland
June 25: Jackknife Brewing, Kelowna
June 26: The Blue Grotto, Kamloops
June 27: Solid Urban Studios, Salmon Arm
As they prepare to hit the road, Cawston is poised to achieve even greater success, driven by their commitment to raising awareness about mental health through their music.
