SEOUL, July 10 – Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest innovations in foldable smartphones and health monitoring accessories on Wednesday. The company has enhanced its flagship foldable models, making them lighter and slimmer while integrating advanced AI functions to compete with Apple in the premium market.
Samsung, which pioneered the foldable smartphone segment in 2019, faces increasing competition as its market share in foldable phones dropped from 81% in 2022 to 63% in 2023, according to Canalys. In response, the new Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been redesigned to be the lightest and slimmest in its series. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 boasts a longer battery life, a higher resolution camera, and a new vapor chamber for better heat management, addressing user feedback.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is priced at $1,099.99, while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 starts at $1,899.99, marking a $100 increase from last year despite rising material costs. Samsung has also integrated new AI functions, including a “listening mode” that offers simultaneous interpretation when paired with Galaxy Buds earphones. Additionally, collaboration with Google has introduced AI search functions that can solve math problems by simply circling them on the screen.
Samsung is also advancing health monitoring technology in its wearable products. The latest Galaxy Watch models feature new sensors and a 3-nanometer chip, enhancing application booting and processing efficiencies by three times compared to last year’s model. These watches are now U.S. FDA-approved for monitoring sleep apnea and offer features like measuring functional threshold power (FTP) for cyclists and tracking advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), a biomarker related to diabetes.
Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring, priced at $399, is a lightweight accessory weighing 3 grams or less. Designed for constant wear, including in the shower or while swimming, it monitors heart rate, stress levels, and can control a Samsung phone’s camera or alarm. The Galaxy Ring represents Samsung’s strategic focus on health monitoring to drive demand and differentiate its products in the competitive smartwatch market.
The new products will be available starting July 24 in South Korea, North America, and Europe. Jack Leathem, Research Analyst at Canalys, emphasized that AI-powered health and fitness features in wearables are crucial for Samsung to attract customers from other brands in the premium segment.
By pushing the boundaries of AI and health monitoring technologies, Samsung aims to solidify its position in the premium market and offer consumers innovative and practical solutions for their tech and health needs.
