The Health Department at Tihar Jail has stated that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is under constant medical supervision and his vital signs remain normal, despite slight weight loss. This statement follows allegations from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) about an “acute” danger to Kejriwal’s health during his judicial custody.
On Sunday, AAP raised alarms about Kejriwal’s health, emphasizing his severe diabetes and significant weight loss. Delhi cabinet minister Atishi expressed concerns over Kejriwal’s health, noting a drastic weight loss of 8.5 kilograms and dangerously low blood sugar levels, dropping below 50 mg/dL five times during sleep. “This situation is extremely concerning, especially for someone with severe diabetes,” Atishi stated during a press conference.
Contrary to AAP’s claims, Tihar Jail authorities assured that Kejriwal’s health is stable. He has been following a medically prescribed diet, which includes home-cooked food as per court orders. “Despite a slight weight loss, his vitals remain normal, and he receives appropriate medical care for all his ailments,” the jail authorities confirmed in a statement. They provided a documented weight chart showing Kejriwal’s weight change from 63.5 kg on June 2 to 61.5 kg as of July 14.
The prison officials accused AAP ministers and legislators of spreading misleading information to undermine the prison administration. “The health status reports contradict the claims made by AAP, and the narrative appears to be driven by ulterior motives,” the authorities asserted. The detailed health updates have been shared with various government officials for transparency and necessary action.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh criticized the release of Kejriwal’s medical report by jail authorities, arguing it was an attempt to downplay the severity of the situation. “A team of AIIMS doctors has found that Kejriwal is losing weight rapidly and experiencing hypoglycemia, with his blood sugar levels dropping below 50 mg/dL five times,” Singh claimed. He added that Kejriwal’s weight was 70 kg on the day of his arrest, which has now reduced to 61.5 kg.
Arvind Kejriwal has been in Tihar Jail since June 2. The ongoing health concerns and the contrasting statements from AAP and Tihar Jail authorities highlight the contentious nature of his detention and the scrutiny over his well-being.
