Gun Violence: A Growing Health Crisis Among Young Mexicans

by Shreeya

Mexico continues to grapple with alarmingly high rates of firearm-related deaths, ranking among the countries with the highest mortality rates from gun violence. While there was a slight decrease in these rates from 2018 to 2022, the issue remains a pressing public health challenge that demands comprehensive strategies. A recent study conducted by experts from the Institute for the Prevention of Gun Injuries at the University of Michigan, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine highlights the severe impact of firearm homicides, particularly among young men aged 20 to 39.

The research analyzed data from 188,397 firearm-related deaths recorded by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). By employing descriptive statistical methods, researchers assessed trends from 2015 to 2022, categorizing data by sex, age group, and geographic location.

The study revealed a staggering 88.2% increase in firearm mortality between 2015 and 2018. Although there was a slight decline of 16.7% from 2018 to 2022, homicides accounted for an overwhelming 92.2% of all firearm deaths during this period. Notably, homicide rates rose significantly from 10.37 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015 to 16.87 per 100,000 inhabitants by 2022.

While men constituted the majority of victims, the rate of increase among women was striking—99.5% compared to 53.3% for men. Furthermore, nearly one-third of victims were aged between 20 and 29 years, with even higher rates observed in those aged 30 to 39.

In contrast to the United States, where suicides represented 56.1% of firearm deaths in 2022 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, homicides are the predominant cause of firearm fatalities in Mexico.

The research also identified that most firearm-related deaths occurred in five states: Colima, Baja California, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, and Guanajuato. Urban areas saw a dramatic increase in gun violence during the study period, with death rates rising between 76.8% and 86.8%. Public spaces accounted for approximately 67.3% of these fatalities, while incidents occurring within homes increased by up to 17.7%.

Dr. Eugenio Weigend Vargas, lead author of the study and researcher at the University of Michigan’s Institute for the Prevention of Gun Injuries, emphasized that while young adults aged 20-39 are most affected by firearm mortality, there is a troubling rise in deaths among individuals aged 10-19—now recognized as a leading cause of death in this age group.

Hiram Beltrán-Sánchez, a professor at UCLA’s School of Public Health who did not participate in the study but provided insights on its implications, noted that understanding mortality rates relative to population size is crucial for assessing risk levels accurately. He argued that while recent data indicates a slight decline in firearm homicides, it is essential to determine whether this represents a plateau or a genuine change in trends.

Weigend Vargas pointed out that escalating violence is often linked to conflicts among organized crime groups and rampant gun trafficking from the United States into Mexico and other Latin American nations. He stressed that this issue should not be viewed in isolation but as part of a broader regional trend influenced by policies allowing the production and sale of assault weapons like AR-15 rifles.

Beltrán-Sánchez concurred that access to firearms significantly contributes to rising homicide rates but cautioned against viewing it as the sole factor. He advocated for addressing gun violence through a public health lens rather than merely as an issue of law enforcement and security.

The findings underscore that firearm-related homicides have become a critical public health crisis affecting not only young adults but society at large. As Mexico faces this ongoing challenge, experts urge policymakers to adopt comprehensive strategies that prioritize public health approaches alongside traditional law enforcement measures.
