Health Alert Issued As Chicken Salads Found To Contain Undeclared Wheat Allergen

by Shreeya

U.S. health officials have issued a public health alert after discovering that a batch of chicken salads produced by Hans Kissle Co. LLC may contain undeclared allergens, posing a risk to individuals with wheat allergies. The alert came following reports that the “Cranberry Chicken Salad” product may actually contain “Classic Chicken Salad,” which contains wheat, a potential hazard for those with wheat sensitivities or allergies.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) revealed that the affected batch was produced on September 20, 2024, and was labeled with a use-by date of October 25, 2024. The product, bearing establishment number P-7573, was distributed to retailers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New York.

While no recall has been initiated, the FSIS is urging consumers with wheat allergies to avoid consuming the product. The agency has also raised concerns that some of the affected salads may still be in consumers’ homes, despite the product no longer being available for purchase. “FSIS is concerned that some of these products could still be in consumers’ refrigerators,” the agency stated. “Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to eat them. Instead, they should discard them or return them to the place of purchase.”

At this time, FSIS has not confirmed how the wrong product ended up in the packaging, but the agency has highlighted the importance of food safety and ensuring that allergens are clearly labeled. Hans Kissle Co. LLC has been contacted for comment, but no statement has been issued yet.

This alert serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by mislabeled food products, particularly for individuals with severe food allergies. The FSIS has advised anyone who believes they have consumed the product and experienced an allergic reaction to seek medical advice immediately.

Consumers are encouraged to check their refrigerators and, if they have purchased the affected product, take appropriate action to avoid any adverse health reactions. This incident underscores the ongoing need for vigilance in food safety protocols and the accurate labeling of allergens.
