Patriots' Drake Maye Sidelined With Concussion During Jets Game

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye will not return to the game against the New York Jets on Sunday after sustaining a concussion from a hit to the head. This incident occurred during the first half of the matchup, marking an unfortunate turn for Maye, who was making only the third start of his professional career.

Selected third overall in last spring’s NFL Draft, Maye was showing promise as he ran downfield when Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood struck him from the right, impacting the back of his helmet. Following the hit, Maye was promptly escorted to a medical tent for evaluation. Initially labeled as questionable to return, it was later confirmed by Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo during halftime that Maye would not continue in the game. Jacoby Brissett was brought in to take over for the remainder of the Week 8 contest.

Despite the injury, Maye was having a solid outing prior to the concussion. He showcased his athleticism with a 17-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, taking advantage of a breakdown in his pass protection. Later in the quarter, he delivered an impressive 40-yard pass while on the run, although the ball was ultimately dropped by the receiver. In total, Maye completed 3 of 6 passes for 23 yards and rushed for 46 yards on three carries.

After the Patriots secured a narrow 25-22 victory, Mayo provided an update to reporters, revealing that he had seen Maye during halftime. “He wanted to go back out there and play, but there’s a protocol that he has to go through,” Mayo stated, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety measures in the wake of head injuries.

The NFL’s return-to-play concussion protocol consists of five distinct phases, which do not follow a strict timeline. The process begins with the player undergoing a rest period and engaging in aerobic exercise before gradually advancing to non-contact activities and ultimately full football drills. This structured approach is designed to ensure the safety and health of players returning from concussion injuries.
