A new messaging service, Chat Health, offering health advice has been introduced in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The service, funded by the government’s Start for Life program, is designed to provide easy access to information for young people and families on a range of topics, including potty training, breastfeeding, and accessing drugs and alcohol support.
Operating on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00 GMT, Chat Health connects users with health visitors and school nurses. Users can send a text message, and upon receipt, an automated reply confirms the message’s reception. Within 48 hours, a trained healthcare professional from the health visiting or school nursing teams responds, offering confidential advice.
Cornwall Council emphasized that the service is not an emergency resource, and individuals in need of urgent advice should contact 999 or visit A&E. Cllr Barbara Ellenbroek, cabinet member for children and families, highlighted that Chat Health enhances the existing health visiting and school nursing advice line, providing a new and innovative way for people to access professional knowledge and expertise quickly and easily. The service aligns with the council’s commitment to making Cornwall a supportive environment for children and families.
