A new study has uncovered a concerning high rate of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) among women in China, particularly in rural areas. FSD, which affects sexual arousal, desire, orgasm, or pain, is often considered a hidden issue. This four-year study, which involved women from six provinces across China, sheds light on the widespread occurrence of FSD and the factors that contribute to its prevalence.
The research tracked the sexual health of women from different regions, both rural and urban, using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), a well-established tool to measure sexual dysfunction. Over the course of 4.13 years, the study found that women in rural areas had lower FSFI scores, suggesting that they experienced FSD at higher rates than women in urban areas. The overall incidence of FSD was 43.07%, with rural women showing a significantly higher risk.
Several risk factors for FSD were identified during the study. Women over the age of 45, those with hypertension, and those who had previously given birth, were found to be at higher risk. Post-menopausal women and those with multiple pregnancies also faced increased odds of sexual dysfunction. Among urban women, those with pelvic inflammatory disease were more likely to experience FSD. However, higher education, intellectual professions, and a family income of more than 6000 RMB per person per month were found to have a protective effect against the condition.
The study’s findings highlight the importance of addressing FSD through public health initiatives, especially considering China’s evolving “three-child policy” and the availability of treatments for sexual dysfunction. The research not only emphasizes the need for targeted health strategies but also offers valuable insights for countries with similar cultural and social environments. Despite some limitations, such as the potential for selection bias and reliance on self-reported data, this research significantly enhances our understanding of FSD and the factors that influence its prevalence.
