US Sees Drop In Overdose Deaths For First Time Since Pandemic

by Shreeya

New data from the CDC reveals a decrease in drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2023, marking the first decline since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The overdose death rate fell by 4%, from 32.6 per 100,000 people in 2022 to 31.3 per 100,000 in 2023.

Experts suggest several factors may be contributing to this positive trend. Dr. Aitzaz Munir from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School attributes the decrease to a more aggressive approach to addiction treatment, including increased availability of treatment programs, naloxone, and drug checking supplies like fentanyl test strips. Dr. Magadelna Cerdá from NYU Grossman School of Medicine suggests a potential decrease in the fentanyl supply and increased tolerance among users may also play a role.

While the national trend is positive, overdose death rates vary significantly by state. West Virginia reported the highest rate at 81.9 deaths per 100,000, while Nebraska had the lowest at 9.0 deaths per 100,000. Between 2022 and 2023, 20 states experienced a decrease in overdose death rates, while six states—Alabama, Alaska, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington—saw increases.Nationwide, the overdose death rate from any opioid decreased, as did the rate from synthetic opioids like fentanyl. However, the overdose death rate for psychostimulants, including methamphetamine, and for cocaine increased during the same period.

Experts emphasize the need to understand the reasons behind the decline in overdose deaths and to invest resources in replicating successful strategies. Dr. Cerdá highlighted the importance of learning from states experiencing decreases to proactively address increases in other areas. The focus should remain on prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies to continue progress in combating the overdose crisis.
