No Rise In Cardiac Arrests Among Athletes During COVID-19 Pandemic, Study Confirms

by Shreeya

A recent six-year study published in the JAMA Network Open has found no significant increase in cardiac arrests or deaths among young athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research compared data from 2017 to 2019 with that from 2020 to 2022, showing 203 cases before the pandemic and 184 during it. This study refutes misinformation claiming that COVID-19 vaccines caused an increase in cardiac issues among athletes.

The study, led by Dr. Jonathan Drezner, involved athletes aged 10 to 34 and relied on data from the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. Drezner emphasized that the findings invalidate claims circulating on social media about the risks of COVID-19 vaccines.

While COVID-19 vaccines carry a small risk of myocarditis, the risk is higher with the virus itself. Most cardiac arrests in young athletes are linked to underlying heart conditions rather than COVID-19 or vaccines. High-intensity workouts can occasionally trigger cardiac arrest, but this is rare and not specific to COVID-19.

The study’s results are consistent with previous research showing no link between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden cardiac arrest in athletes4. Despite some limitations due to non-mandatory reporting, the data suggests no spike in adverse events related to COVID-19 or vaccines.
