Breast-conserving therapy is associated with improved sexual well-being compared to mastectomy followed by breast reconstruction, according to a recent study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This research highlights the importance of considering sexual health when discussing breast cancer treatment options.
Many women with breast cancer face sexual health concerns, with up to 85% reporting sexual dysfunction. However, few receive medical guidance on this issue. Breast-conserving therapy (BCT), often referred to as a “lumpectomy,” offers an effective alternative to mastectomy for many patients. While mastectomy followed by breast reconstruction has benefits for quality of life and self-esteem, its impact on sexual well-being is less favorable.
The study analyzed data from 15,857 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery between 2010 and 2022. About 54% of these patients had BCT, while 46% underwent postmastectomy breast reconstruction (PMBR). Using the validated BREAST-Q questionnaire, researchers compared sexual well-being scores between these groups over time.
Before surgery, both groups had similar sexual well-being scores. However, by six months after surgery, the BCT group showed significant improvement, with scores remaining higher than the PMBR group even at five years. On average, BCT patients scored 7.6 points higher on sexual well-being.
Despite these findings, only a small percentage of patients received sexual medicine consultations. The study emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to address sexual health more effectively in breast cancer patients.
Dr. Jonas A. Nelson of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center noted, “For breast cancer patients eligible for either BCT or mastectomy, BCT may be the superior choice for maintaining sexual well-being.” The researchers stress that discussing the impact of breast cancer surgery on sexual health is crucial for improving patient care.
