A recent study has raised concerns about a potential side effect of semaglutide, the active ingredient in popular weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. Researchers from the University of British Columbia (UBC) found that patients taking semaglutide experienced significantly more hair loss than those using another weight-loss medication, bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave).
Hair Loss More Common with Semaglutide
The study, published on the preprint server MedRxiv, analyzed data from nearly 2,000 patients taking semaglutide and over 1,300 using bupropion-naltrexone. The results showed that hair loss diagnoses were more than twice as frequent in the semaglutide group. Women appeared to be at higher risk than men.
While the findings are preliminary and the study has not yet undergone peer review, they align with reports from clinical trials and patient anecdotes. Dr. Mohit Sodhi, the study’s lead author, noted that previous research had not systematically examined this issue in real-world settings.
Could Rapid Weight Loss Be the Cause
Experts suggest that hair loss may not be directly caused by semaglutide itself but rather by the rapid weight loss it induces. Significant physical stress, including major weight changes, can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to temporary shedding—a condition known as telogen effluvium.
Additionally, because GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic suppress appetite, some patients may not consume enough protein and essential nutrients, further contributing to hair thinning.
Doctors Recommend Proactive Measures
Dermatologists and primary care physicians who work with GLP-1 patients say hair loss is a common concern. To minimize risk, they advise prioritizing protein-rich meals, considering supplements like biotin, and monitoring overall nutrition. In some cases, topical treatments such as minoxidil may help.
Before starting a GLP-1 medication, patients should discuss potential side effects with their doctor, especially if they have underlying conditions like thyroid disorders or anemia that could worsen hair loss.
Weighing the Risks and Benefits
Despite the possible side effect, experts emphasize that for many patients—particularly those with obesity or diabetes—the benefits of semaglutide still outweigh the risks. However, those using the drug for mild or cosmetic weight loss may want to consider alternative options if hair loss is a major concern.
Further research is needed to confirm the findings and determine the exact relationship between semaglutide and hair thinning. For now, patients experiencing significant shedding should consult their healthcare provider for personalized advice.
