A new study suggests that the quality of a man’s semen might be linked to how long he lives. Researchers from Copenhagen University Hospital analyzed data from nearly 80,000 men over 50 years and found that those with healthier sperm—higher counts and better motility—lived almost three years longer on average than men with poorer semen quality.
The Sperm-Longevity Connection
The study, published in Human Reproduction, revealed a clear trend: the better a man’s semen quality, the longer his life expectancy. Men with over 120 million motile sperm had an average lifespan of 80.3 years, while those with under 5 million lived to 77.6 years. The findings held true even after accounting for pre-existing health conditions and education levels.
Why Does Semen Quality Matter
While the exact reason for the link remains unclear, experts suggest that semen quality could be a marker of overall health. Poor sperm health may reflect underlying issues like chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, or lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity, or stress.
Should Men Get Their Sperm Tested
Despite the findings, doctors do not recommend routine semen testing for longevity predictions. Fertility specialist Dr. Roger Hart warns that widespread screening could cause unnecessary anxiety, since semen quality alone doesn’t dictate lifespan. Instead, experts emphasize healthy lifestyle choices—like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking—as the best way to support both reproductive and overall health.
The Bottom Line
While more research is needed, the study adds to growing evidence that sperm health is tied to general well-being. For now, focusing on good habits may be the smartest move for men looking to live longer—and healthier.
