Mental Health Providers Often Overlook Bulimia In Patients, Study Finds

by Shreeya

A new study reveals that mental health providers frequently miss diagnosing bulimia nervosa. When given a case of a patient with disordered eating, only 25% of providers correctly identified the condition. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Florida, was published in the journal Eating Disorders.

The research highlights two common issues that may lead to misdiagnosis. One factor is the misconception that bulimia patients must have a low body weight. In fact, many people with bulimia have average or higher body weight.

The second issue is that providers often overlook excessive exercise as a compensatory behavior, even though it is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a symptom of bulimia.

“Many mental health providers may not associate excessive exercise with bulimia,” said Dakota Leget, a doctoral student who led the study. “This behavior could be overlooked during treatment.”

The researchers surveyed over 200 mental health providers, who reviewed two patient vignettes. One vignette described a patient with a healthy weight, while the other described a patient with obesity. Both patients engaged in binge eating and excessive exercise.

Only 27% of providers correctly diagnosed the patient with bulimia, while 38% mistakenly diagnosed her with binge eating disorder.

The study emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis. Misdiagnosing bulimia can lead to incorrect treatments and missed health risks, like dangerously low sodium levels due to excessive exercise.

Leget stresses the need for more education on eating disorders for providers, especially those without specialized training. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial for patient recovery.
