Grain Millers has recalled more than 63,000 pounds of rolled oats because of possible plastic pieces found in the product. The recall affects two types of oats sold in bulk in California and Indiana.
The recalled products include:
- Regular Rolled Oats #5 (20 sacks, each 1,800 pounds)
- Quick Rolled Oats #21 (17 sacks, each 1,600 pounds)
These oats were packaged in large bulk sacks and may not have individual labels, so consumers should check their pantries carefully.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this as a Class II recall. This means eating the oats could cause temporary or reversible health problems, but serious health issues are unlikely.
The plastic contamination likely happened during packaging, and while no injuries have been reported, the FDA warns that swallowing plastic pieces could cause choking or stomach problems.
The recall started in February and officially ended on April 25, but some oats might still be in homes. If you have these oats, do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store or throw them away.
Grain Millers is one of the largest oat processors in North America, supplying about 25% of the oat market. Their regular rolled oats are often used in baking and breakfast foods, while quick rolled oats are popular in instant oatmeal products.
Consumers who buy oats in bulk should check with their stores to confirm the source of their oats and stay alert for any updates.
