In the ongoing investigation into the health issues associated with Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s beni kōji (red yeast rice) supplements, the health ministry and the National Institute of Health Sciences have announced the discovery of additional unexpected compounds in some of the supplements.
On Friday, the health ministry revealed that at least two compounds, not typically found in the supplements, were detected during the analysis of ingredient samples.
Previously, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had identified puberulic acid, a natural compound derived from blue mold, in the supplements. While puberulic acid has antibiotic properties, it is highly toxic and is not commonly included in supplements.
The health ministry received ingredient samples from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, covering the past three years, and the national institute analyzed those produced specifically between June and August of the previous year. Health issues have been reported among users of supplements containing ingredients manufactured during this period.
Efforts are underway to identify the newly discovered compounds and determine their role in the health problems. A ministry official expressed the urgency of identifying these compounds as quickly as possible.
According to Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, as of Thursday, there have been five suspected deaths associated with the use of its supplements, with 240 people hospitalized. Additionally, a total of 1,434 individuals have either visited or intend to visit hospitals due to health concerns related to the supplements.
The company has received a staggering 88,000 inquiries regarding health damage from its supplements, highlighting the widespread impact of the issue.
