The United Nations issued a stark warning on Thursday, highlighting an unparalleled health crisis unfolding in the Gaza Strip amidst the protracted conflict with Israel. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) sounded the alarm on the dire circumstances faced by families in Gaza, where the Israeli military campaign has persisted for nearly eight months.
In a communication posted on X, UNRWA detailed the daily hardships endured by Gazans, citing a litany of challenges including injuries, trauma, inadequate sanitation, the proliferation of infectious diseases, food and water shortages, and restricted access to essential healthcare and medications.
The agency emphasized the gravity of the situation, declaring, “Families in Gaza are facing an unprecedented health emergency,” and urgently appealed for a cessation of hostilities.
Since the onset of the Israeli offensive on October 7, the toll on the Gaza Strip has been devastating, with over 36,170 fatalities and 81,400 individuals sustaining injuries. As the conflict wears on, extensive areas of Gaza lie in ruins, compounded by a severe blockade restricting access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medical supplies.
The Israeli government faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) amid mounting international scrutiny of its actions in Gaza.
