Palomar Health has reached a settlement of $250,000 to address allegations of fentanyl diversion from one of its facilities in Escondido, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Monday.
Following Palomar’s report to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration regarding potential diversion of controlled substances by an employee, a government investigation revealed that “numerous vials” of fentanyl were diverted from automated medication dispensing machines at Palomar’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab in Escondido over a five-month period.
Additionally, the investigation uncovered that unused fentanyl was not disposed of properly, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Representatives from Palomar Health did not respond immediately to a request for comment regarding the settlement. However, a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office clarified that the settlement was reached without admission of liability.
In addition to the monetary settlement, Palomar Health has committed to enhancing security measures and implementing specialized training regarding the proper handling of controlled substances, officials stated.
