Egypt and Namibia are taking significant steps towards strengthening their collaboration in the health sector. Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, recently met with Namibia’s Minister of Health, Kalumbi Shangula, to discuss potential areas for cooperation and knowledge exchange.
Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population, outlined several focal points of this collaboration. Key areas include sharing Egypt’s expertise in public health initiatives, localizing pharmaceutical manufacturing, and accelerating drug registration processes.
The ministers also explored formalizing current and future memorandums of understanding. A significant part of their discussion centered on enhancing human resource capabilities through the exchange of medical personnel. This exchange aims to address Namibia’s shortages in dentists, pharmacists, and nursing staff, while also offering training in the latest medical programs and technologies.
In addition, the two countries are considering joint efforts in manufacturing medical supplies and improving medical laboratories.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar highlighted Namibia’s keen interest in learning from Egypt’s comprehensive health insurance system, as well as its strategies for pandemic management, crisis response, and disaster preparedness. He called for the swift development of a memorandum of understanding to facilitate post-graduation training for Namibian medical personnel. This would include the possibility of Namibian professionals gaining experience in Egyptian hospitals, universities, and research institutes across various specialties.
Furthermore, Egypt proposed involving Namibia in the “Egyptian One Health Strategy,” a collaborative effort with the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture. This strategy aims to prevent infections and diseases by adhering to the One Health principle, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
Namibia’s Minister of Health expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s consistent support during challenging times. The strong bilateral relations have led to agreements enabling Egyptian medical teams to deliver essential healthcare services to the people of Namibia.
