The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Dementia Observatory (Osservatorio Demenze) have recently solidified a three-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a formal partnership geared towards enhancing care for healthy ageing.
Operated by the National Center for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Centro Nazionale per la Prevenzione delle Malattie e la Promozione della Salute) within the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore della Sanità), the Dementia Observatory, headquartered in Rome, Italy, serves as a pivotal hub for coordinating and bolstering both national and international responses to dementia. This includes efforts dedicated to prevention and health promotion, underpinned by a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy and a holistic life-course perspective.
Outlined within the MOU are three key areas of collaboration:
Development of long-term care standards aimed at enriching the design and organization of care continuums for older individuals, with a specific emphasis on those grappling with cognitive impairments.
Examination and synthesis of existing scientific literature on emerging issues pertinent to healthy ageing, with the goal of prioritizing and guiding interventions.
Creation of resources tailored to address sociocultural diversities in the approach to caring for older adults.
These targeted areas are poised to drive significant advancements in elderly care. As highlighted by Anshu Banerjee, WHO’s Director of the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing, this collaborative endeavor is strategically positioned as the world nears the midpoint of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing.
Dr. Banerjee further emphasized the global scope of this collaboration, orchestrated by WHO, which seeks to foster a transformative environment conducive to ageing gracefully. This initiative hinges on the collective engagement of governments, civil society, international organizations, professionals, academic institutions, media outlets, and private sector entities alike.
