Elly Schlein, the secretary of the Democratic Party, has raised concerns regarding healthcare spending in Italy under Giorgia Meloni’s leadership, stating that it has decreased since Meloni assumed office in Palazzo Chigi. Schlein emphasized the importance of bringing healthcare expenditure in Italy up to the European average, which is typically calculated based on the GDP.
In an interview with “Radio anch’io” on Rai Radio1, Schlein criticized the government’s approach, particularly highlighting a recent decree issued just four days before the vote. She criticized the decree for lacking financial allocation, claiming that it promised to address waiting lists without investing in hiring or allocating funds. Schlein suggested that the funds allocated for other purposes, such as in Albania, could have been utilized to recruit doctors and nurses, thereby improving the healthcare system domestically.
Schlein expressed concerns that the current healthcare system may prioritize individuals with financial means, allowing them to bypass waiting lists through private payment, while those without such resources may be forced to forgo treatment. This, she argued, exacerbates inequalities within the healthcare system.
Regarding the upcoming elections for the president of the European Commission, Schlein voiced support for the socialist candidate, Nicholas Schmidt, the outgoing labor commissioner. She emphasized the need for institutions comprised of elected candidates and called for reforms to the existing treaties, advocating for the elimination of certain flaws within the European Union’s governance structure.
