ECU Health Expands Summer Meal Program to Three Locations

by Shreeya

ECU Health, in collaboration with Food Lion Feeds, Sodexo, and the ECU Health Foundation, is extending its Summer Meal Program to three locations: Greenville, Bethel, and Ahoskie. The initiative aims to provide free meals for children, teenagers, and individuals with disabilities throughout the summer months.

During the school year, many students rely on free or reduced-price meals provided by schools. However, when schools close for the summer, these meals become unavailable, placing additional financial strain on families. In North Carolina, over 57% of students receive free or reduced lunch, with significantly higher percentages in counties like Pitt (66%) and Hertford (over 90%).

The selected meal distribution sites were chosen based on factors such as county need, existing partnerships, and the social vulnerability index of each location.

Since its inception in 2021, ECU Health’s Summer Meal Program has been committed to providing free meals to children and teenagers during the summer break. In 2023 alone, 51 ECU Health team members distributed over 2,800 meals to children in need, totaling nearly 12,000 meals since the program’s launch.

By expanding the program to multiple locations, ECU Health aims to address food insecurity among vulnerable populations and ensure that children and teenagers have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer.
