Children’s behavioral health services are teetering on the precipice

by Shreeya

The dire state of children’s behavioral health services in Massachusetts demands urgent attention and intervention. Organizations dedicated to serving these vulnerable populations are facing significant challenges, including dwindling resources and a growing need for crisis services. To address this crisis, increased funding is essential, particularly to raise the pay of clinicians who play a vital role in providing crucial support to children and families.

The Association for Behavioral Healthcare’s issue brief highlights the alarming decrease in access to home- and community-based services, coupled with a steep decline in the workforce. The result is longer wait times for care, exacerbating the already pressing staffing challenges faced by service providers. As a consequence, many children are left waiting for essential services, unable to access the level of care they urgently require.

The situation is particularly dire for in-home services, where staffing shortages have led to a significant decrease in available services and an increase in crisis response utilization. While crisis response teams can provide short-term stabilization, the lack of follow-up services prolongs the cycle of instability for children and families.

At the heart of the problem lies inadequate salaries for clinicians, which make it difficult to recruit and retain skilled professionals. To address this issue, substantial rate increases are urgently needed to ensure that clinicians are fairly compensated for their invaluable work. Specifically, advocating for rate increases based on the 75th percentile of federal Bureau of Labor Statistics benchmarks would more accurately reflect the true labor costs and help attract and retain qualified staff.

Without immediate intervention and substantial investment in children’s behavioral health services, the situation is likely to worsen, with longer wait times, program closures, and continued failure to provide essential support to families in need. It is imperative that the administration and Legislature prioritize funding for these critical services to prevent further harm to vulnerable children and families.
