In a strategic move to bolster sexual health services, councillors have approved the recommissioning of Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health Treatment Services across Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council.
This decision aims to specifically address the needs of traveller communities, the homeless, and individuals living with HIV.
The agreement, valued at £36,112,278 over six years, will see Cambridgeshire Community Services taking charge of providing these vital services. This recommissioning comes at a crucial time, as rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been rising nationally over the past few years.
During the meeting of the council’s adults and health committee on Thursday, members unanimously agreed to the recommendation, emphasizing the importance of accessible sexual and reproductive health services.
Val Thomas, acting director of Public Health in Cambridgeshire, expressed her satisfaction with the committee’s decision. “I am delighted that the committee has agreed to recommission this service,” she stated. “The service will play a key role in preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections through offering access to prompt treatment alongside work to prevent infections and unplanned pregnancies.”
The newly recommissioned service will not only provide treatment but also actively promote sexual and reproductive health prevention messages. Through targeted campaigns and promotional activities, the service aims to educate and inform the public about safe sexual practices and the importance of regular health check-ups.
This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to enhancing public health infrastructure and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support and care they need. By addressing the rising rates of STIs and focusing on preventive measures, the recommissioned services are poised to make a significant impact on the overall health and well-being of the community.
