MARIETTA, Ga. — The Marietta Police Department has taken a significant step towards supporting the mental health of its officers by appointing a full-time wellness officer, becoming one of the few departments in the nation to do so. This proactive approach addresses the substantial stress and trauma that law enforcement officers routinely face on the job.
Officer Jonnie Moeller-Reed, a 24-year veteran of the department, has been named to this pivotal position. With a decade of experience as a detective in Homicide and Crimes Against Persons, Officer Moeller-Reed has firsthand experience with the toll that repeated exposure to traumatic incidents can take on an officer’s mental health.
“It took its toll, and I realized if I’m struggling, there are other people out there struggling too,” said Officer Moeller-Reed.
Possessing a master’s degree in forensic psychology with a focus on law enforcement, Officer Moeller-Reed leads the department’s peer-to-peer support team. This team includes eight officers and Barney, a crisis response K-9. They provide critical support, and if they are unable to assist, they have connections to extensive community resources.
“Officers go through critical incidents, traumatic experiences. If not dealt with properly, it can have lasting effects on their personal lives and careers,” explained Officer Moeller-Reed.
The introduction of a full-time wellness officer aims to change the traditionally stoic culture within law enforcement where admitting to struggles is often seen as a weakness. Officer Moeller-Reed hopes to shift this mindset and encourage officers to seek help when needed.
She expressed her gratitude towards the chief and command staff for recognizing the importance of mental health support and for implementing this innovative role within the department.
By providing dedicated mental health resources, the Marietta Police Department is taking a crucial step in ensuring the well-being of its officers, promoting a healthier work environment, and ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness of their law enforcement efforts.
