West Nile Virus Outbreak Claims 32 Lives in Israel

by Shreeya

The Health Ministry has confirmed that 440 individuals have been diagnosed with West Nile fever, with 32 fatalities reported. This marks a significant public health concern as Israel grapples with the early onset of the disease, which typically appears between June and November. The early emergence this year is attributed to global climate changes and increased humidity, fostering mosquito proliferation.

West Nile virus infection is asymptomatic in about 80% of cases, as per the Health Ministry. However, approximately 20% of those infected may develop symptoms ranging from mild fever and headaches to severe body aches. Severe neurological complications are rare, affecting less than 1% of infected individuals.

Transmission of the virus occurs primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes, especially those that feed on birds. It is important to note that West Nile virus does not spread through human-to-human contact, nor can it be transmitted from humans back to mosquitoes.

The central regions of Israel are particularly vulnerable due to high humidity levels, which create optimal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Prof. Nadav Davidovitch, director of the School of Public Health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, emphasized the need for vigilance but advised against panic. “We need to be alert and continue the measures that are taken every year,” he said.

The Health Ministry has issued several recommendations to minimize the risk of infection. Residents are advised to wear long-sleeved clothing during the evening hours when mosquitoes are most active, install window screens, and use fans. Additionally, mosquito repellent products and devices are recommended to deter mosquitoes from living spaces.

Preventative measures also include regular maintenance of potential mosquito breeding sites. Water in vases, plates under flower pots, and pets’ drinking bowls should be replaced weekly. Female mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, so it is crucial to eliminate hidden water sources in basements, rooftops, and gutters. Items that can collect water, such as old tires, buckets, and barrels, should be removed or overturned.

The Environmental Protection Ministry has reported the presence of West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes in several locations, including Tel Aviv, Herzliya, Kiryat Ono, Petah Tikva, the Lev Hasharon Regional Council, and the Even Yehuda Local Council. Additionally, infected mosquitoes have been found near Ben Gurion Airport and in southern regions like Eilat and the Eilot Regional Council.

In response, the ministry has instructed local authorities to intensify monitoring and extermination efforts. The ministries of Health and Environmental Protection will continue to update the public on areas where infected mosquitoes have been detected and provide ongoing information as necessary.

“Every person severely infected is a tragedy,” Davidovitch stated, highlighting the importance of increased awareness among high-risk populations. The Health Ministry’s guidance aims to mitigate the spread of the virus and protect public health during this critical period.
