The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an urgent warning following a deadly Listeria outbreak that has claimed nine lives across multiple states. The outbreak, which began in July, has resulted in 57 hospitalizations in 18 states, with fatalities reported in South Carolina, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, and New York.
The CDC has identified deli meats, particularly those from Boar’s Head, as the primary source of contamination. These products may still be in consumers’ refrigerators, posing a significant health risk due to their extended shelf life.
Key Health Tips to Prevent Listeria Infection:
Check Your Refrigerator for Recalled Products:
Inspect your refrigerator for any Boar’s Head products with “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the label. These products may have sell-by dates extending into October 2024. Dispose of any potentially contaminated items immediately.
Thoroughly Clean Your Refrigerator and Surfaces:
Listeria can survive in refrigerated environments and on surfaces such as meat slicers. Regularly clean and disinfect your refrigerator, countertops, and kitchen tools with hot, soapy water or a bleach solution to prevent contamination.
Practice Safe Food Handling:
Always wash your hands, utensils, and food preparation surfaces after handling deli meats or any potentially contaminated foods. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and other foods to avoid cross-contamination.
Heat Deli Meats Before Consumption:
Listeria can be killed by thoroughly cooking food. If you must consume deli meats, especially those from potentially affected sources, heat them until steaming hot before eating.
Be Aware of Symptoms and Seek Medical Attention if Needed:
Listeria infection can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. If you experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, confusion, or balance issues after consuming deli meats, seek medical attention immediately.
The CDC continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to stay informed through regular updates. Everyone is urged to exercise extreme caution and take preventive measures to protect their health.
