Urgent Health Alert: Counterfeit Vodka Found With Toxic Industrial Alcohol, Fsa Warns

by Shreeya

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a critical health alert concerning counterfeit bottles of Glen’s Vodka that contain dangerous levels of isopropyl alcohol, a solvent used in industrial settings. This chemical, which is not safe for human consumption, can lead to severe health risks, including alcohol poisoning, and, in extreme cases, death.

Local authorities have been notified and are actively working to remove these fake products from stores and bars. The FSA is urging consumers to remain cautious and check the authenticity of any Glen’s Vodka they purchase.

Signs of counterfeit vodka include unusual odors or flavors that differ from the genuine product due to the presence of isopropyl alcohol. Consuming even a small amount of this chemical can result in harmful symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. More severe effects may include respiratory problems, extreme intoxication, and even coma.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms after drinking suspected counterfeit vodka is advised to seek immediate medical help. The FSA emphasized the dangers of isopropyl alcohol in a recent statement, saying, “The products tested contained isopropyl alcohol, which makes them unsafe. This chemical is not meant for human consumption and can quickly lead to alcohol poisoning, which in severe cases may result in death.”

The FSA advises consumers to carefully inspect bottles for a laser-etched lot code located between the label and the base. If the bottle lacks this code or emits a strange odor, it should not be consumed. Consumers are urged to keep the bottle in a safe place and report it to local authorities for further investigation.

The FSA also encourages individuals with information regarding the production or sale of counterfeit alcohol to report it via their confidential National Food Crime Unit Hotline at 0800 028 1180.

Efforts are underway to prevent further distribution, with businesses being alerted to the issue. The counterfeit alcohol poses a significant public health risk, and authorities are working swiftly to ensure that no more consumers fall victim to these dangerous products.
