The World Health Organization (WHO) and TikTok have launched a year-long collaboration to enhance access to reliable, science-based health information. This partnership underscores WHO’s dedication to using digital platforms to improve global health literacy and promote healthy behaviors in a fast-paced, digital world.
As more people turn to social media for information, platforms like TikTok play a significant role in shaping public health behaviors. However, the spread of misinformation remains a critical challenge. With one in four young adults seeking news on social media, this collaboration aims to counter misleading content and foster positive health discussions.
“This collaboration can serve as a turning point for platforms to become more socially responsible,” stated Dr. Jeremy Farrar, WHO Chief Scientist. “Through partnerships with TikTok, we aim to help people access credible health information and engage in meaningful scientific conversations, ultimately promoting a healthier future for all.”
TikTok, with over 1 billion users worldwide, plans to use its platform to boost health awareness by offering reliable information. The platform will focus on reducing stigmas, sharing personal stories, and supporting users with resources to improve well-being.
Valiant Richey, Global Head of Trust and Safety Outreach at TikTok, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Millions of users come to TikTok daily to share and connect, including around well-being. We are excited to join forces with WHO’s Fides network of health influencers to bring engaging, credible mental health content to our community.”
The WHO’s Fides network, launched in 2020, brings together over 800 content creators who reach 150 million people globally, actively countering misinformation with evidence-based content. This collaboration aims to further empower influencers through TikTok’s creator training programs, helping them produce accurate, digestible health information.
